15 things you shouldn't miss - a checklist for a first date

While I was drinking my morning coffee and reviewing my daily obligations, I read an email that made me stop and think. The question of “what to see” in Republika Srpska, in a terrain that I know so well that I feel like I know every stone, suddenly sounded like a serious task to me. I’ll put about ten of them on paper, I thought. But how do you choose just ten things? How do you fit the space from Novi Grad to Trebinje, nature, culture, people, impression and feeling?

The beauty of working in tourism is, among other things, when even the simplest question takes you back to the beginning of the story. To what I love about this job, to combine impressions, experiences, and recommendations into one whole.

So, here are my initial FIFTEEN and a list that is neither final nor “official.” This is an attempt to gather in one place what I believe every traveler should experience before embarking on deeper exploration, hidden destinations, and personal pearls of discovery.

15. Ethno Museum – Ljubačke doline, Banja Luka

Photo: ViaDinarica

The Ljubačka Valley Ethno Village Museum is one of the most beautiful places to visit if you like the presentation of a rural idyll, nature, tradition and authentic local food. This is an open-air museum that faithfully depicts the appearance of a rural cooperative from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, allowing you to imagine the life of our ancestors as it really looked. There are more than 40 buildings and as many as 6,000 carefully collected exhibits, from tools and furniture to objects that marked the everyday life of the past. Anyone who steps into the Ljubačka Valley will feel the warmth of tradition and the spirit of former life, which is why this place rightfully bears the status of one of the most significant ethnological units in the region. The kindness of the hosts comes as the “icing” on the cake of the whole impression.

14. City of the Sun, Trebinje

It is difficult to make any list of tourist recommendations without including the City of the Sun Trebinje, the largest tourist and sports complex and resort in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is a place where rest, entertainment and activities come together in one fully rounded experience.
An ethnic restaurant, Varoš Bazaar, Prince's Residence, auto camp, wellness, swimming pools, sports fields, lake, White City, Dino Park, apart-hotel, Aqua Park and numerous other facilities make the complex alive throughout the year.
The City of the Sun has become an indispensable stop on every visit to Herzegovina, especially for families, but also for athletes, and those who just want a good place to relax and enjoy themselves.

13. Vučijak Stud Farm, Prnjavor

Photo: Mladen Trivunic

The Vučijak Stud Farm is a place where tradition and noble Lipizzaner horses create an atmosphere of peace and authenticity. Although the only Lipizzaner stud farm in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not currently at its best, its greatest potential lies precisely in the Lipizzaner horses, which are part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The future of the stud farm largely depends on finding a model of public-private partnership that would revive it and bring it to the level of European stud farms. I included it on this list of experiences for what it can become, not for what it is today. There is no entrance fee, coffee should be brought along, and carrots for the horses are always a good idea.

12. Herzegovina Gracanica, Trebinje

Photo: Lazar Mihajlovic

Hercegovina's Gračanica is the most visited sacral complex in eastern Herzegovina and one of the most recognizable places in Trebinje. It was built in 1999–2000 as a fulfillment of the wish of Jovan Dučić, who wanted to rest in a church similar to Kosovo's Gračanica on one of the hills above his hometown.

The complex also includes Dučić's grave, a bell tower, a bishop's palace, an amphitheater, and the restaurant "Dučićev pogled", known for one of the most beautiful viewpoints over the city. Gračanica in Herzegovina has also become a favorite wedding venue, and a visit before sunset remains one of the most beautiful experiences for anyone who visits.

11. Ethno village of Stanisici, Bijeljina

Photo: Ethno village Stanisici

The Stanisici ethno village is a place that takes you out of the present and back to the world of our ancestors, simplicity and nature. Created as a result of years of searching for old houses, objects and architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it makes it one of the most authentic complexes in the region.
The village is divided into two parts: the secular part, built of wood with log cabins, mills and lakes, and the spiritual part, represented by stone replicas of medieval monasteries and bridges.
The mill from 1917 still grinds flour today, and the dairy, blacksmith shop, and numerous houses preserve the story of former life and crafts.
The center of the spiritual part is the monastery of Saint Father Nicholas, next to a stone amphitheater on the lake that brings cultural events to life.
The Stanisići ethno village is a unique place where history, tradition and nature merge into an experience that has been the subject of constant interest among visitors for more than 20 years, since it has existed.

10. Coffee under the Plane Trees, Trebinje

Photo: gotrebinje

One of the simplest, yet most valuable impressions in Trebinje is “coffee” under the Plane Trees. A meeting place, a measure of time and a ticket to the soul of Herzegovina. The avenue of 16 plane trees, more than 120 years old, was planted during the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is still considered the most beautiful ambient corner of the city, and according to unwritten tradition and the opinion of many, the Plane Tree Garden is considered the most beautiful garden in the former Yugoslavia. In Trebinje, it is often said: Whoever has not had coffee under the Plane Trees, it is as if he has not been to Trebinje at all, and that is precisely why this place becomes a kind of ticket for further sightseeing in the city and the first stop of every traveler. Stories and legends related to the Plane Trees, which have been living and retold for more than a century, give this garden the presence of the spirit of the past whose echo echoes far into the future.

9. Sailing on the Una Ship, Novi Grad

Photo: Aleksandar Kovjanic

They say that when you set out to explore the world, first explore the world around you. When it comes to the Una River, that really makes sense. A warm recommendation for a visit, especially in spring and summer. One of the best ways is by Una boat.
Recommendation:
Sail into the sunset because it gives the impression that the river is not flowing but gliding over the surface, which creates a momentum in which everything around you stops and slows down. The bonus is standing on the waterfalls, taking photos and swimming in one of the cleanest rivers in Europe.

8. Tvrdoš Monastery, Trebinje

Tvrdoš Monastery, one of the most visited Orthodox monasteries in Herzegovina, was built on the foundations of an old church dating back to the 4th century. A visit here provides a unique opportunity to encounter the spiritual atmosphere, but also to experience the gastronomy of Herzegovina, through wines, olive oil and other local products. The monastery's vineyards include old and new plantings of autochthonous varieties such as Vranjac and Žilavka, and in the old cellar the wine matures in oak barrels, while the modern cellar enables modern production methods. Tvrdoš is a symbol of the fusion of ancient and modern, spiritual and gastronomic, and provides an authentic way to feel the spirit of Herzegovina, and, without a doubt, leaves a lasting impression for lovers of history, spirituality and gastronomy.

7. Perućica Rainforest, Sutjeska National Park, Foča

Photo: Sutjeska National Park

The Sutjeska National Park is so rich that I had to divide it into two parts, and dedicate the first to its greatest treasure, the Perućica rainforest.

Perućica is a place where nature functions as it has for thousands of years, without human intervention. Within the Sutjeska National Park, there is also the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maglić, Lake Zelengora, and numerous zones in which the habitats of rare plant and animal species have been preserved. This is the number 1 place in Bosnia and Herzegovina for all nature lovers. From hiking, cycling, photo safaris, canyoning, kayaking, horseback riding, fishing, lakes, massifs, lookouts, the choice is endless.

Although the park often suffers from poor framing and insufficient protection and branding, its natural values are unassailable. Sutjeska National Park possesses a diversity of biodiversity and values that rank it among the best experiences in all of Europe for nature lovers.

6. Janj Islands, Šipovo

Photo: SeeSrpska

Several rivers, pastures, rainforests, springs and caves, but most of all the kind and hospitable people who are mainly engaged in agriculture and livestock breeding, make this region unique.

One of the gastronomic pearls is Janjska pletenica, a hand-tied cheese, as crunchy as Herzegovinian Škripavac and with a taste sweeter than Italian mozzarella, produced on the untouched pastures of Vitorog and next to the cleanest water of one of Europe's rivers. This entire region, from Mrkonjić Grad, Jezera, Ribnik to Šipovi, offers a wealth of natural landscapes, hiking and cycling trails, but also encounters with people who, with their knowledge, work and hospitality, create a true experience of domestic tourism.

This entire region is at a turning point, which will clearly determine the future of tourism development there. The great potential that the destination possesses requires a clear destination development plan, and the reason is simple. Do not allow the potential to go from unused to unusable in a short period of time.

5. OK Fest, Foča

Photo: OK Fest

One of the festivals that I would say can present us in the right light when it comes to this segment of the offer is exactly OK Fest. It is much more than music. In addition to being a confirmation that we are capable of having a world-class festival, it is also the energy of summer, forests, lakes and rivers of the Sutjeska National Park. An unforgettable festival experience that combines nature, people and music.

4. Dayak ride on the Vrbas River, Banja Luka

Photo: VisitBanjaluka

The Dayak is to Banja Luka what gondolas are to Venice, a unique symbol of the city. Although it is seasonally oriented, it is an indispensable motif that tells every visitor that they have arrived in Banja Luka. The view of the city from the river, along with the mastery of the Dayak boatmen, provides an authentic and unforgettable experience. The tradition of this boat, revived by the modern Dayak from 1964, combines history, skill and the charm of the city. Given that authenticity is the word that has the most valuable meaning in modern tourism, there is great room for the city to further position and strengthen its recognition precisely through this symbol, making the Dayak a cultural and tourist sign of Banja Luka.

3. Skiing on Jahorina, Pale

Photo: Jahorina Regional Park

Jahorina is a mountain that combines Olympic tradition and modern skiing, with trails that hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics. Today, it has a modern vertical transport system and more than 50 kilometers of groomed trails. From the top of Ogorjelica, there are views of Romanija, Bjelašnica, Treskavica and distant mountain ranges that enrich every descent. Although we cannot add the epithet “untouched nature” to a large part of Jahorina, the quality of the trails, the atmosphere and the Olympic spirit make Jahorina a destination that finds its place on every winter list of ski lovers.

2. Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge, Višegrad

Photo: Marko Radić

The Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge in Višegrad has a heritage value that elevates it to the level of a world heritage site. Built between 1571 and 1577, by order of the Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolović, and according to the design of the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, this building is a masterpiece of classical Ottoman architecture. Its 11 stone arches create an imposing silhouette that has withstood the test of time and water for centuries.

In 2007, the bridge was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, confirming its cultural, historical and architectural significance.

This place is also a literary symbol. It is here that the plot of one of the most significant works of Yugoslav literature is set, the novel "The Bridge on the Drina" by Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić. His story about the bridge, people and times further solidified the myth and significance of this Višegrad pearl.

A visit to Višegrad, a walk across the bridge and a view of the green Drina River remain deeply etched in the memory. The impression is further enhanced by a boat ride through the Drina Canyon, as a unique way to experience a place that combines history, nature and literature.

1. Rafting on the Tara River, Foča

Photo: “Drina Tara” Fishing Center

Tara is a river that has everything a nature lover could wish for. Untouched wilderness, adrenaline, powerful rapids and water so clean that guests drink it directly from the river during the descent. Its canyon, one of the deepest in the world, leaves an impression of unrivaled beauty that leaves no one indifferent. Proof of the quality and reputation of this river is the fact that two World Rafting Championships have been held right here (the second in partnership with Banja Luka, on the Vrbas River).

The Tara River flows through Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in its last part forms a natural border between them. Rafting on the Tara River is an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.
